Highlights of this cruise:
Auckland is located on the north island of New Zealand, situated between two magnificent harbours, the Waitemata and the Manukau. It is the largest city in NZ and is often referred to as the ‘City of Sails’ due to the large number of yachts which travel in its waters.
Auckland city has a great range of shops including designer boutiques, markets and stalls. It is also home to many fine galleries and museums including the Auckland Museum and the Auckland City Art Gallery. Restaurants in the waterfront suburbs such as Mission Bay or St Heliers and the inner city specialise in local seafood delicacies. There are also a number of attractive public gardens and reserves surrounding the city.
The large Polynesian population in Auckalnd include Maori, Samoan, Cook Island and Tongan people whom all contribute to the city's vibrant culture. Local markets and churches in particular provide an insight to the local cultures.
Lautoka is the second largest city of Fiji. It is in the west of the island of Viti Levu, 24 kilometers north of Nadi, and is capital of the Western Division of Fiji. It is a quiet, shady town of broad avenues, shady sidewalks and towering royal palms which run down the middle of Vitogo Parade, the main drag running from the harbor to the heart of town.
The duty-free shops and other stores along Vitogo Parade mark the boundary of Lautoka's business district; behind them are several blocks of stores and the lively Lautoka Market. Handcraft stalls at the front of the market offer a variety of goods, especially when cruise ships are in port. Everywhere you go, shop owners and people on the street are always quick to greet you with a friendly smile. On the other side of Vitogo Parade, there are residential streets which trail off beyond the playing fields of Churchill Park. The Hare Krishnas have their most important temple in the South Pacific on Tavewa Avenue.
Pago Pago is the capital of American Samoa, a chain of seven South Pacific isles 2600 miles south of Hawaii. Pago Pago is a mixture of colorful semi-urban communities, a small town, and a harbor surrounded by dramatic cliffs, which plunge almost straight into the sea. A climb to the summit of Mt. Alava) provides a magnificent bird's-eye view of the harbor and town. Less spectacular is the view from the top of the pass above Aua Village on the road to Afono.
Pago Pago is actually one of the several villages along the shore of the harbor and is located at the very back (inside) of the embayment. However, because the name Pago Pago is associated with the harbor itself - the only significant port of call in American Samoa — Pago Pago is now generally applied to the whole harbor area, the town and including the village. The port itself is located in Fagatogo, a village adjacent to Pago Pago.
Nukuʻalofa is the capital, chief port and largest city of Tonga. The city is located on the coast of Tongatapu island. It is the commercial, transport and social centre of Tonga, however there are few tourist attractions except for the Royal Palace, bustling market and a few shops.
The Royal Palace is in the heart of downtown. Although not open to the public, you get a good view of the colonial wooden building from the waterfront. Another attraction is the Royal Tombs, set in a manicured park which is closed to the public though visible through the fence. At the Centenary Church on Sunday you can see the King and Queen at worship.
If you are after handicrafts, Langafonua, a women's co-operative in downtown, sells handicrafts at reasonable prices. The harbour wall along Vuna Road, where most of Nuku'alofa's tourist accommodation is located, is good for a stroll and spotting the offshore islands. The beach is coral but is OK for swimming.
